weight restrictions

Neighbors -

Spring is on its way and with it we'll have warmer temperatures and thawing conditions. Both conditions will impact our roads. This is a friendly reminder to please observe the road weight restrictions when they come into effect, some time in May, until they are over, some time in June. These restrictions are 50% of axle weight and apply to all commercial vehicles including farm trucks and trailers.

Speed and weight are two of the most damaging issues that can harm our fragile road surface. So, please observe the weight restrictions when in effect. Signs will be posted at each end of Eielson Farm Road when the restrictions come into effect. If you have questions or concerns, please contact a road service area commissioner.

Thanks,

Stu Davies

Stu and Everyone,

So who is going to enforce this new restriction? If I see a vehicle that looks like it might be breaking this new rule, what do I do? I don't believe the State Troopers are going to be the least bit interested. Just curious.

This isn't a new rule. We have had approved weight restrictions on the road for a few years now. Once the Borough announces the dates for the weight restrictions to us, the RSA puts up official signs at each end of the road. While you are correct that the Troopers are probably not very interested in enforcing the rule, they are the ones to do so. However, once the signage goes up, truckers pretty much self regulate.

Hi Joyce

We discussed weight restrictions at the RSA's winter meeting and it was decided that a friendly reminder be sent to folks using the road to please observe weight restrictions when in effect. Two users were specifically mentioned, Fairbanks Pumping and Thawing and Black Gold Express. Fairbanks Pumping and Thawing is using the road on a daily basis with more than one truck based upon my observations. Black Gold is basically moving equipment for their farming operations and is not a daily user. The RSA asks that both of these companies as well as other users who might have a need to haul heavy loads during this time follow state mandated weight restrictions.

As far as enforcement is concerned, Ron is correct in stating that users generally self-regulate themselves. However, there are those who choose not to follow the rules and may incur fines. The primary agency in charge of enforcing commercial transportation is Commercial Vehicle Enforcement. They operate frequently on the Richardson Hwy. between Fairbanks and North Pole and I have seen them once or twice at Bathing Beauty parking lot. If we have a lot of heavy traffic, these are the folks I would call to do some spot checking to insure that weight restrictions are being followed.

Thanks for the question Joyce.

Please be advised that the Borough Rural Services department has informed the 23 Mile RSA that weight restrictions are in effect as of 8:00 AM this date and will remain in effect until further notice. The weight restriction is 50% of axle weight and no overloads. I will post signs at each end of Eielson Farm Road. Please protect our fragile roads by following these weight guidelines.

Thanks
